KPT 6: A Collection of Image Filters for Photoshop and Other Compatible Hosts
KPT 6 is a set of plug-ins that provide a powerful yet easy to use interface for creating dazzling and unique effects for print and the web. KPT 6 plug-ins are compatible with Adobe Photoshop and other applications that support Photoshop plug-ins such as MetaCreations Painter[^1^]. KPT 6 includes 10 plug-ins: KPT 6 basics, KPT Equalizer, KPT Gel, KPT Goo, KPT LensFlare, KPT Materializer, KPT Projector, KPT Reaction, KPT Turbulence, KPT SceneBuilder, and KPT SkyEffects.
In this article, we will focus on one of the plug-ins: KPT Equalizer. This plug-in allows you to adjust the contrast and sharpness of an image by manipulating its frequency ranges. You can use it to enhance details, smooth out noise, create artistic effects, or correct lens distortions. The plug-in has three main controls: a frequency slider that lets you select a range of frequencies to work on, a strength slider that lets you adjust the amount of effect applied to that range, and a mode menu that lets you choose between four modes: Sharpen, Blur, Emboss, and Solarize.

To demonstrate how KPT Equalizer works, we will use this photograph of a leaf with water droplets on it (#4^). The image has some fine details in the leaf veins and the water droplets, but also some noise and blur in the background. We will use KPT Equalizer to sharpen the details and smooth out the noise.
First, we open the image in Photoshop and launch KPT Equalizer from the Filter menu. We see the plug-in interface with a preview of our image (#3^). We can zoom in or out of the preview by using the plus and minus buttons on the bottom right corner. We can also drag the preview around by clicking and holding on it.
Next, we select the Sharpen mode from the mode menu. This mode will increase the contrast of the edges in our image. We then move the frequency slider to select a low frequency range (between 2 and 8). This range affects most of the image except for the very fine details. We then move the strength slider to +50 percent. This applies a strong sharpening effect to that range. We can see how this affects our image by looking at the preview (#5^). The tree bark has become more colorful and textured, but also more noisy. The leaf has lost some of its detail and has turned into a yellow glow. The water droplets have remained almost untouched.
We can undo this effect by clicking on the reset button next to the strength slider. We can also compare our original image with our modified image by clicking on the compare button on the bottom left corner. This will show us a split screen view of both images.
Instead of applying such a strong effect to a low frequency range, we will try applying a subtle effect to a midrange frequency range (between 32 and 64). This range affects mostly the edges and details in our image. We move the frequency slider to select this range and then move the strength slider to +25 percent. This applies a slight sharpening effect to that range. We can see how this affects our image by looking at the preview (#7^). The leaf veins and water droplets have become more crisp and clear, but without introducing too much noise or artifacts. The background has remained smooth and blurry.
We are satisfied with this result, so we click on the check mark button on the bottom right corner to apply the effect and return to Photoshop. We can see our final image (#8^) with enhanced details and contrast.
KPT Equalizer is just one of the many plug-ins that KPT 6 offers. You can explore other plug-ins such as KPT Gel, which lets you create realistic or surreal gel-like objects; KPT SceneBuilder, which lets you create 3D scenes with lighting, shadows, reflections, and textures; or KPT SkyEffects, which lets you create realistic or fantasy skies with clouds, stars, planets, suns, moons, and more.
